babyThe pelvic floor muscles include fibers of the levator ani and the coccygeus.  The levator ani group consists of the iliococcygeus, the puborectalis and the pubococcygeus.

The levator ani is broad and thin.  It is designed to stretch as other muscles do.  It can become weakened over time due to excessive stretching during pregnancy and childbirth, as well as lack of use.  Obesity can also cause excessive stretching of the group, as well as poor muscle control.
